American Chemical Society
The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a scientific society based in the United States that supports research and education in chemistry. Founded in 1876 at New York University, the ACS has over 155,000 members across all degree levels and disciplines, including chemistry, chemical engineering, and related fields. It is one of the largest scientific societies in the world by membership.[3] The ACS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and holds a congressional charter under Title 36 of the United States Code. Its headquarters are in Washington, D.C., with a major staff presence in Columbus, Ohio. The ACS is a leading publisher of scientific information, producing peer-reviewed journals, national conferences, and the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS). Its publications division manages over 80 scholarly journals, including the Journal of the American Chemical Society, and the weekly trade magazine Chemical & Engineering News. The ACS hosts two national meetings annually, covering all aspects of chemistry, along with smaller specialized conferences. The Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a global provider of chemical databases, serves as the society’s primary source of revenue.
The ACS has student chapters at nearly every major university in the United States and abroad.[4] These chapters focus on volunteering, career development, and research discussions.[5] The society also publishes textbooks, administers national chemistry awards, provides research grants, and supports educational outreach programs.
The ACS has faced criticism for high pricing of its products (such as SciFinder, journals, and publications), opposing open-access publishing, and initiating multiple copyright enforcement lawsuits. Critics argue that these practices conflict with the organization's non-profit status and its mission to disseminate chemical knowledge.[6][7] Provided by Wikipedia
