Al final de su excelente tejido de ensayos sobre la historia cultural de la Ciudad de México desde el apogeo del Porfiriato hasta mediados del siglo XX, Mauricio Tenorio cita la opinión de Borges, “mero literato” de la “república meramente Argentina” acerca de la superioridad literaria de las Mil y una noches de Antoine Galland frente a otras traducciones realizadas a partir del original árabe (o persa) que han sido consideradas filológica e históricamente más correctas. Implícita en la reflexión de Borges estaba la consideración de que ella se daba no solo a pesar de tales incorrecciones, sino, en parte al menos, como mérito de ellas.
