En los inicios de toda pesquisa histórica, policial o judicial hace falta una huella, un indicio material, algún objeto enigmático a partir del cual se nutre la intriga y se desarrolla la investigación (Foucault, 1994). La libreta que acompañó a Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) en su viaje a Italia (1805), olvidada entre los papeles de quien fuera uno de los hombres más célebres de su tiempo, retenido por la historia como el autor del “Cosmos”, significó el punto de partida de la trama de la investigación que aquí se esboza: una encuesta sobre la articulación entre las prácticas de viaje, las formas de la escritura y la construcción de la ciencia en Humboldt y una reflexión histórica y epistemológica sobre las prácticas y objetivos del viaje científico alrededor de 1800. This paper analyzes the notebook that Humboldt had on his trip to Italy (1805), an object forgotten among his papers and sketchbooks.
