to and opportunities for effective coordination of transit
infrastructure and urban development. It then recommends a
set of policies and implementation measures for overcoming
these barriers and exploiting these opportunities.
Well-integrated transit and land development create urban
forms and spaces that reduce the need for travel by private
motorized vehicles. Areas with good access to public transit
and well-designed urban spaces that are walkable and
bikeable become highly attractive places for people to live,
work, learn, play, and interact. Such environments enhance a
city's economic competitiveness, reduce local pollution
and global greenhouse gas emissions, and promote inclusive
development. These goals are at the heart of
transit-oriented development (TOD), an urban form that is
increasingly important to sustainable urban futures. This
book uses a case study approach. It draws lessons from
global best-case examples of transit-oriented metropolises
that have direct relevance to cities in developing countries
and elsewhere that are currently investing in bus rapid
transit (BRT) and other high-capacity transit systems. It
also reports the results of two original in-depth case
studies of rapidly growing and motorizing cities that
introduced extended BRT systems: Ahmedabad, India and
Bogota, Colombia. Two shorter case studies enrich the
understanding of factors that are critical to transforming
cities with transit. |

Transformando las ciudades con el transporte público presenta la visión más actualizada sobre cuándo, cómo y por qué las ciudades pueden crecer alrededor de nuevos sistemas masivos de transporte público. Resalta la integración entre el uso del suelo y el transporte público como una de las iniciativas estratégicas más importantes disponibles para el desarrollo de un futuro urbano más sostenible. Para lograr una integración efectiva es necesario tener una visión estratégica, contundente y progresista de la futura ciudad, un marco institucional propicio y unos modelos financieros sostenibles. Las ciudades necesitan prever su futuro a largo plazo, al elaborar visiones que posteriormente se articulan en planes espaciales e iniciativas específicas para el uso de la tierra. Un marco espacial debe guiar las inversiones en el transporte público y en otros elementos de la infraestructura. El libro brinda lecciones y recomendaciones vitales que se basan en cuidadosos análisis de caso. Expone exhaustivamente tanto los éxitos como los desafíos relacionados con el desarrollo urbano que el transporte público fomenta, y lo hace por medio de profundos y detallados estudios de caso en cuanto al diseño y manejo del uso del suelo, tanto en ciudades desarrolladas como en aquellas en vías de desarrollo. Cette étude analyse le processus complexe d’intégration des transports et de l’aménagement du territoire dans les villes en pleine croissance des pays en développement. Elle recense d’abord les obstacles et les éléments favorables à une coordination efficace de l’infrastructure de transport et de l’urbanisation. Elle recommande ensuite un ensemble de politiques et de mesures d’application pour surmonter les premiers et exploiter les seconds. Les quartiers qui offrent un accès adéquat aux transports publics et des espaces urbains bien conçus où il est possible de circuler à pied et à bicyclette deviennent des lieux très attrayants où il est agréable de vivre, de travailler, de s’éduquer, de se divertir et de communiquer. Les environnements de cette nature rehaussent la compétitivité économique d’une ville, diminuent la pollution locale et les émissions mondiales de gaz à effet de serre, et favorisent un développement solidaire. Ces objectifs sont au centre du développement de noyaux urbains autour de pôles de transports collectifs (dit développement axé sur les transports, ou « TOD »), un modèle urbain qui gagne en importance pour assurer aux villes un avenir durable. Le présent ouvrage s’appuie sur des études de cas. Il se fonde sur les meilleures pratiques observées au plan mondial pour dégager des métropoles qui privilégient les transports en commun des enseignements intéressant directement les villes qui, dans les pays en développement et ailleurs, investissent actuellement dans des réseaux d’autobus à haut niveau de service (BHNS) et autres réseaux de transport de grande capacité.
